Thalia Westcott Malcolm (B. Sept. 10, 1885, NYC - D. Jan. 30, 1963, Paris).

This gouache on paper is a "Garoupe Beach scene with Figures"  near Nice France, 1933  The tag from the back of the picture is from the original framer:   S. Franco, 19 Rue Pastorelli, Nice, France. Thalia Westcott Malcolm - aka - Mrs. Donald Malcolm was born in NYC on September 10, 1885.  Ms. Malcolm like all great society ladies had several birth years:  The French artist register, Benezit says she was born in 1885; Who Was Who in American Art gives her a birth year of 1888, and AskArt (Thalia Westcott) gives her a birth year of 1877.  Additionally, she used several notable addresses in locations such as:  New York City, Paris and Vence France.  Vence is near Nice. There is a reference to Ms. Malcolm in the book:   The Education of a Gardener by Russell Page.  Mr. Page discusses her outdoor patio/garden in Vence France.  Malcolm was part of the rich and elite of New York City society.  It is clear that if Ms. Malcolm was alive today, she would know the “Kard

Edmund Schureman Campbell - Artist & Architect (1884-1950)

Rivanna River Alcove Watercolor on Paper  Approx:  14.5 X 19.5 Inches Edmund Schureman Campbell was born in New Jersey October 28, 1884. He received his B.S. (1906) and M.S. (1907) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and spent the year 1911-1912 studying at l'Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris. After serving on the faculty of Carnegie Institute of Technology, the Armour Institute of Technology, and as Dean of the Beaux Art Institute of Design in New York, he came to the University of Virginia in 1927 to head the School of Architecture and to be Curator of the Bayly Museum of Fine Arts. He held these positions until his death in 1950. Josef Alan Levi - b. New York, Feb. 17, 1938

A Mad Men Moment: Mid Century Modern   Josef Levi's work in the late-1960s and early- 1970s is primarily concerned with light  and the optical effect of color. Entitled: "K-PGO" Green, Pink, Orange Polka Dots  Op art painting with polka dot composition, Oil on Canvas.  Signed on reverse, "Josef Levi 1971". 58 1/4" x 58 1/4" J osef Levi was born in New York City in 1938, and studied at the University of Connecticut and Columbia University. He traveled widely in Europe and the Middle East, and served in the US Army in the early 1960s. Levi's first one-man exhibition was held at Stable Galleries in 1966, and further one-man shows were held there in 1967, 1969 and 1970. In 1966 he was included in "Light in Art" at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, and the following year he exhibited a fluorescent light work (with similar optical effects to this painting) in the influential exhibition "Light Motion Spac
